EMDR therapy is often talked about as a powerful approach for trauma ,anxiety and PTSD, which naturally leads some people to ask whether EMDR can be done on yourself. As a Clinical Psychologist and EMDR therapist, I’m often asked this question, particularly by those who want quick relief or who feelunsure about starting therapy. The clear answer is no, EMDR therapy should not be self-directed.
EMDR works by helping the brain process distressing memories that have become stuck. During EMDR therapy, carefully structured phases are followed, including preparation, stabilisation, memory processing and closure. These stages are essential for safety. Without professional guidance, there is a real risk of becoming overwhelmed by emotions or memories that surface during processing. An experienced EMDR therapist is trained tonotice subtle changes in your emotional state and adjust the work accordingly.
Another important factor is bilateral stimulation, whichsits at the heart of EMDR. While it may look simple from the outside, its userequires clinical judgement. Timing, pacing and direction all matter. When EMDR therapy is delivered properly, the therapist continually assesses how your nervous system is responding. This level of monitoring simply is not possible when working alone.
There is also the question of preparation. EMDR therapy begins with building grounding skills and emotional stability. These skills support you during and after sessions, helping you stay within a manageable emotional range. Skipping this stage can make distress feel more intense ratherthan resolving it.
Some people come across videos or apps that claim to offerself-guided EMDR. These are not a substitute for therapy and can create false expectations. EMDR is recognised by NICE for PTSD because it is delivered within a structured therapeutic relationship, not because of eye movements alone.
